The outer wall

The Terro bait stations handle ants that make it inside, and diatomaceous earth blocks them at the door. But the real battle starts outside. I needed a chemical perimeter that would stop ants (and other bugs) before they even reached the house.

That's where Talak comes in.

Application

Talak has a built-in measuring chamber on the bottle — just rotate the cap, pour the measured amount into a Chapin pump sprayer, fill with water, shake, and pressurize. The sprayer gives a nice fine mist that coats the ground evenly.

I sprayed a three-foot-wide band along the outer perimeter of the house. It took about six hours to do the whole thing.

The result

About six hours after spraying, I walked around and noticed dead insects on the ground. Lots of them. The barrier was working.

I've had a few times when ants found a new way in — they're persistent — but the combination of all three methods has kept my house ant-free for extended periods. When they do come back, it's usually because they found a gap I missed.

Safety

Talak says it's safe for indoor use, but with a toddler in the house I wasn't testing that. The diatomaceous earth is non-toxic and works great for indoors. Talak stays outside where it belongs.

The bottom line

An effective outdoor perimeter spray that works best as part of a three-layer defense. Combine with Terro bait stations for inside and diatomaceous earth at entry points for complete coverage.
